Giotto, The Presentation of Mary in the Temple

1303-1305
Fresco
Scrovegni Chapel, Padua

The traditional figures for this image type are all present — little Mary, her mother Anne offering her to the priest at the top of the stairs, and St. Joachim (the old man in the background with the halo). In addition a servant carrying a heavy basket puts one foot on the first step, and another old man with a forked beard is conversing with Joachim. He could be another member of Mary's family, perhaps her grandfather Mathan or one of her uncles. (See the page on the Holy Kinship.) The group behind the priest are most likely additional members of the family. They would not be Temple clergy, because some of them are women.
